The Mask & Mirror - Then & Now
Self-produced and boasting an exotic palette of instrumentation from cello and uillean pipes to dumbeg, tabla and oud, The Mask & Mirror, Loreena's fifth studio album was released in March 1994. Spanning Spanish, Celtic and Moroccan influences, it follows paths of inspiration from Ireland and Santiago de Compostella to the sand dunes of northern Africa.
Accompanying musical settings of poems by St. John Of The Cross and Shakespeare are eclectic, richly-textured originals including the seductively dramatic “The Mystic’s Dream” and “Marrakesh Night Market”.

After negotiating a major label distribution deal for her fourth recording The Visit in 1991, The Mask and Mirror represented a major career break-through in the US, UK, northern and southern Europe, Turkey, Japan, Mexico, Brazil and Australia setting the table for 1997’s global hit single “The Mummer’s Dance” and its multi-platinum host album The Book of Secrets.
When it was released, the LA Times described it as “music full of sombre depths, spiritual longings and age-old echoes.” The album, which the artist herself considers “a historical and musical pilgrimage,” has sold more than three million copies worldwide.

The accompanying world tour in 1994 and 1995 established McKennitt as a significant concert
attraction with a drawing power that persists to this day, her 2024 European tour playing to more than 120,000 fans in 14 countries. The second leg of The Mask and Mirror Anniversary Tour will be taking place in Eastern Canada this fall, beginning Oct. 13, 2026 in Moncton, NB. and concluding in Montréal on Nov. 2. The Mask and Mirror Definitive Edition release campaign is to be supported in Europe in 2027 by the third leg of McKennitt’s The Mask and Mirror Anniversary Tour which will will see her play at least 30 shows in eight northern European countries between February 22nd and April 3rd and feature
